"Milan: The city of Fashion"
Everyone stop what you're doing & sit back, get a glass of something and put your feet up because Milan Fashion Week has hit its' full course (and nearly at an end) and it's practically what you would call the definition of perfect. Goodbye New York and London and hello Milan, Italy; the city of fashion and the city of impeccable style. If theres one thing I need to do before I die, that would be a huge trip over to Milan to have the honour of witnessing Milan Fashion Week and immerse myself in it completely. One day that dream will come true, but for now I have the pleasure of admiring stunning photos from fashion shows and pre/post events which just make me more excited for and about the Fashion World. Fashion Weeks from both New York and London impressed big time, so it was no wonder that everyone was expecting big things from the fashion capital, and safe to say that it did deliver + MORE! Dozens and Dozens of fashion designers spent a significant amount of time thinking of and designing beautiful garments which are both unique and never to be seen before, but also coincide with the current 70's obsession.
Designers like Dolce& Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli are just some of the designers that have graced themselves on the Milan Fashion Week FW15-16 scene and emerged with stunning, eye-dropping pieces worthy of every praise, every photograph and every penny.
Let's get into it !
Just as supermodel Jordan Dunne said, MaxMara FW15-16 "was cosy". Before I pounce into the glory of full bodied oversized trench coats, decadent layers of fabric and carefully stitched throw-overs, let me just say that anything and everything from the 70's is accepted for this upcoming chilly season. I'm talking broad shoulders, slouchy hair and back to basics face make-up; all of which worked together in the MaxMara line up to deliver reinvention. Oversized trenches is something I'm a huge fan of, so when I heard that MaxMara FW15 IS trenches, I was beyond excited. Models gave off a careless, casual 'Idgaf' attitude as they strutted out with arms crossed and faces none to pleased. Oversized pieces gave off a relaxed and dare I say, COSY feel, and we now all know where to purchase a warm coat for those days where you really don't want to try with your outfit. Super versatile, durable and re-wearable: MaxMara FW15 evoked the comfortable yet stylish sloth in all of us.
Prada= expensive, feminine, timeless style. FW15-16 was the definition of Prada, and everything Prada is. Every year, the brand comes out with garments more beautiful than the next that all make us want to attend high teas on Sundays and fancy dinner parties with Chandeliers and Monet&Chardon. Defying the feminine, elegant and professional woman, Prada's looks are always tailored, always timeless and always remain a must-have in any wardrobe. Playful pastels overjoyed the stage after a much loved (but quite repetitive) monochrome: it was time to see something new and something new is what Prada delivered. All that pink, green and bright pastel blue are there to bring excitement and diversity into a wardrobe and still keep things very girly no matter of the weather outside. My favourite piece is the green singlet + pant combo, and the high ponytails are to die for.
There's a reason why Fendi has twice as more favourite looks of mine; and that's because the FW15-16 line up was basically perfection in my eyes. Colours, shapes fabrics, styles & cuts of Fendi's winter line up mimic artistic expression and scream "I'm not settling with just a fur coat design" No, Fendi went all out. Puffy jackets and dresses, fur details, le fur boot and even acceptance of the colour orange were just some of my favourite moments of Fendi. Remaining highly expensive and beyond stylish, but allowing one self to go out of the normal boundaries of high end fashion is a hard task, and yet this line-up proved anything is possible. Not to mention that manouvering such difficult fabric is a beyond hard task so I would like to say humongous props to the dress makers who allowed it all to be possible.
Remember SS15, when Moschino decided to completely Barbie Girl-ify the concept of their line-up? Well this time, they chose a similar , child-like theme to bring out the kid in all of us; turning to gangster, warner bros' cartoon inspired looks. No doubt that the inspo for FW15-16 came from a miriad of Warner Brothers cartoon marathons and down-town LA swag boys. Needless to say, I am beyond astounded at how Moschino managed to turn the relentlessly tacky into glam and allow for huge chainz to be more than acceptable to wear to places. The line-up became more vivacious and artistic as it progressed, ending the show with a bang by the few full couture gowns splattered with colourful graffiti. Starting with a pop, ending with a bang of fireworks. Moschino FW15 is only something we have dreamt about; until now.
Alessando Dellacqua's FW15-16 line has me drooling and wishing I could have each and every one of the garments featured within this amazing, never seen before line-up. Detail after detail emerged and worked to bring complexity to otherwise simplistic pieces , and the delicate fabrics created a relaxed tailored feel. Never before have I seen a gold trench coat, and never before have I seen a coat with such detailed artwork printed on the frontal piece; such intricacy and design thought-out is a work of art in itself. Of course, Dellacqua managed to impress me with the impeccable choice of boots to compliment each look, and because I am currently going through a midi/maxi dress obsession, a few dreamy pieces are definitely making it on my wish list.
I am absolutely obsessed with lace and sheer at the moment and Ferreti's FW15-16 confirmed this for me. Absolute intricate and delicate designs came out one after the other from the get go and it was obvious that Victorian Fashion was the inspiration. Black lace, white lace, red details on black sheet, white details on white sheer, gold details on black sheer... every one of them screams love. The high collars and decadent embellishments are the result of inspiration from the Victorian 18th century Fashion scene, and the sheer fabric adds a modern and sexy touch to an otherwise classic and sophisticated line up. I guess in a way, Ferreti brings a new take on femininity through the choice of fabrics combined with classical 18th century pieces where it was unacceptable put your body on show. Combining the two ideals together; the 21st century worlds' developing ideals of embracing a womans' body and making it a work of art, and the 18th centurys' ideals of covering up as much as possible, Ferreti managed to portray both sides of both centuries and corroborate them to create a unique art form.
Celebrating the beauty of femininity, Gucci FW15-16 did not take a back seat on joining the #freethenipple movement and instead embraced it in full course with sheer heaven. Not missing the point of a Fall/Winter collection, Gucci included wonderous styles and cuts of the trench coat and the fur coat, and even went above and beyond expectations by creating a duo-chrome complimentary colour palette fur coat which screams quirky and modern. Loafers and sandals were the go-to shoe and models held structured bags to tie looks in together. I adore the leather midi skirt and the sheer black dress with the collar embellishment. Nipples are so high fashion.
Roberto Cavalli is one of those brands that you know will always come out with classically beautiful and timeless pieces that will always remain style icons of the season. No matter what season, or trend, or style phenomena, Roberto Cavalli refuses to blend into the norm and instead opts for timeless classics re-invented; whilst still pertaining to the season style inspirations. Take FW15-16; the 70's are the inspiration and Roberto Cavalli drew on that idea and created his own version of 70's style combined with classy, tailored etiquette pieces. High flare pants tailored to perfection, animal print vests, full length bright coloured dresses with waist bands and fringe fringe fringe were just some of the 70's style inspos Cavalli twisted into their collection whilst still keeping things highly expensive and high-fashion. I love the come back of the fringe and that is why the fringe skirt and fringe trench are my favourite pieces of Cavalli's for FW15-16.
Dare I say that this collection caught my eye because of that voluminous, Rei Kawabuko (Comme Des Garçons) looking throw over coat. Mother of coat, it is brilliant. It is beautiful. And I wish for it to be mine. Apart from the amazingness that is the Bottega Veneta FW15-16 coat, the looks featured a different take on the word tailored business attire; pink and black checkered pants created a stylish and quirky version of the classic structured high waisted pant, and the green and black chekered turtle neck coat is so unique; i've never seen anything like it before. Turtle necks were the definite go to pieces in Bottega Veneta's FW line up and I love how the brand decided to take on the classic and usually quite simplistic pieces in a wardrobe and create a whole different look by playing around with colours. Thoroughly enjoyed this line up.
After starting Fashion design, I highly respect the intricacy and difficulty of garments and appreciate them so much more knowing that the time and efforts that was taken to achieve such clean cuts and hide seams so well. This is exactly what I feel about Kristina Ti's FW line up; the brand opted out of using easy fabrics and went on a whim with creating ferociously flattering looks out of lace, satin and velvet. I myself have played around with satin and let me tell you; it is not an easy material to manoeuvre and extremely difficult to cut, sew and tailor properly. So that is why i'm so in love with Kristina Ti's wonderful pink satin dress.. it sits wonderfully, the seams are invisible and I cannot even fathom to understand how it's even possible to create such beautiful pockets without screwing up the fabric around it. Props to the dress makers; honestly such gorgeous and perfect work. I am also absolutely loving the lace playsuit + fur jacket combo. oh, and the knee high boots are to die for. You know how I feel about boots.
Oh, Versache Versache. How I absolutely adore you. For Fall/Winter 15-16, Versache decided to play with bright pops of colours and even it out with black on black; just to keep things that slight bit sane. The classic Versache print logo, in bright colours, printed across a tailored mini dress is one of my favourite pieces and is a representation of the FW15 collection; different but pertaining to the brand. Neon greens, leon yellows are sea blues were the pops of colour and made me think back to the summer days; perhaps just what Versache was planning to do... bringing the summer even into the winter. Of course, no collection of Versaches' can be complete without a few high fashion, all black tailored garments suited for the every day female who has a lot of S*** to do in her day and doesn't mess around. When you're wearing Versache, you're practically the boss of life.
Yay for pastel pinks and yay for fur! Oh, and double yay for colour blocking !!! MSGM's line up got me drooling all over the floor and day dreaming about those coats.... and those colour block boots as well.. let's just keep things nice and simple here and say that I am utterly obsessed with this line up. MSGM has taken it into the fashion world in terms of artistic expression and isn't afraid to play around with different colours that work together to compliment and contrast each other beautifully. The full length colour block scarf is also one of my favourite pieces from the line up and I really need to get one of MSGM's pieces pronto.
Dolce&Gabbana FW15-16 rejoiced and celebrated being a mother; a mother with style that is. This line up has a very personal and intricate touch to it because pieces are embellished with messages to 'mum' and childrens sketches. Models came out looking effortlessly feminine and stunning and the addition of toddlers and babies into the show perfectly created the aura of the mother, praising and acknowledging the woman and the mother. Anyone who knows me well definitely knows that I love pastel baby pinks and anything embellished with roses and that is why D&G is so exciting for me; pink and rose , midi and mini skirts/dresses, crowns and crystal necklaces; even roses in bags were all the go for FW15 and evoked a warm feeling inside me. The collection screamed modern femininity and successfully appreciated and praised the beauty of being a mother. Models walking the show reminisced about their own mothers , stating that they're walking for them in this collection.
I loved these looks the most from Milan Fashion Week FW15-16. Thank you Milan for delivering us such an amazing line-up ! Now onto Paris xx
